Yogen-in is a small Higashiyama temple with a dark connection to Fushimi Castle. When the temple was rebuilt, floorboards from the castle were reused in the ceiling; the marks are traditionally said to be bloodstains from warriors who died there.
The temple also has important painted screens and a quieter atmosphere than the nearby headline sights. It is close enough to Sanjusangen-do and the Kyoto National Museum to add to the same walk, especially if you are interested in Kyoto's layered war and temple history.
