Ujigami Shrine is a modest but important Shinto shrine in Uji, recognized as part of Kyoto's World Heritage listing. It is often described as one of Japan's oldest surviving shrine buildings.
The shrine is close to Byodo-in and makes a quiet counterpoint to that temple's more famous Phoenix Hall. Visit both to get a better sense of Uji's older religious landscape.
