The present Fushimi-Momoyama Castle is a 1964 concrete reconstruction, not the original Momoyama period fortress, but its hilltop position above the Fushimi sake district gives commanding views over southern Kyoto and the Uji River valley. The original castle built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1594 was destroyed in the 1615 siege; the reconstruction follows the general layout.
The surrounding Momoyama hillside park is more historically resonant than the castle itself, containing the burial mounds of both Hideyoshi and Emperor Meiji. The park is open and free; the castle reconstruction charges admission.
