Murakami-ju

Kyoto pickle shop in continuous operation since 1764, tastings at the counter

Murakami-ju has been making tsukemono (Japanese pickles) on Nishiki Market since 1764 and is one of the oldest businesses on the street. The shop stocks more than forty varieties of Kyoto-style pickles -- shibazuke (purple shiso), suguki (fermented turnip), and the seasonal pickle sets that change monthly -- most of which can be tasted at the small counter inside.

Buying tsukemono is a common Kyoto souvenir tradition; the shop sells individual portions as well as gift-box sets. The fermented suguki in autumn is particular to Kyoto and rarely available elsewhere.
