Nonomiya Shrine

Nonomiya Shrine is a small Shinto shrine beside Arashiyama's bamboo grove. In the Heian period, imperial princesses who were chosen to serve at Ise Shrine purified themselves here before leaving Kyoto.

The shrine is quick to visit, but it adds useful historical context to the bamboo-grove walk and nearby Tenryu-ji. Its dark torii gate and mossy setting make it feel older and quieter than its busy surroundings suggest.
