Omen

Simple udon noodle restaurant near the Philosopher's Path, family-run and open since 1967

Omen is a long-running udon restaurant a short walk from the Philosopher's Path canal, operating from a refurbished machiya since 1967. The menu centres on thick, hand-cut wheat noodles served in a clear dashi broth with a side platter of raw vegetables, toasted sesame, and spicy daikon for adding to the broth. The approach is more casual than kaiseki and the prices reflect it.

The Omen near the Philosopher's Path is the original; several branches have opened across Kyoto since. The interior is unhurried and suited to a post-walk lunch.
