Kyoto Butoh-kan

Kyoto Butoh-kan is a small theatre devoted to butoh, the slow, intense Japanese dance form that emerged after World War II. Performances are intimate and atmospheric, often with live shamisen, and feel very different from Kyoto's more familiar temple-and-garden circuit.

Check the schedule and reserve ahead, as performances are limited and the venue is small. It is a strong choice if you want one evening in Kyoto that feels contemporary, strange, and deeply Japanese.
