Tōei Kyoto Studio Park

Working samurai-drama film studio open as a theme park

Tōei Kyoto Studio Park (Tōei Uzumasa Eigamura) is a working film studio that doubles as a theme park, on the western edge of Kyoto. The standing sets — an Edo-period townscape, a Yoshiwara-style red-light district, a working daimyō residence with surrounding garden — are still used regularly for jidaigeki samurai-period TV dramas and films, and on a quiet weekday you may stumble across an actual shoot in progress.

The park is most fun for children, with costumed samurai and ninja roaming the streets, several themed indoor attractions, and a small theatre staging live action shows. Adults will probably get more out of the small museum of pre-war Japanese cinema and the chance to wear a full kimono or samurai outfit and have a portrait taken in the period set. The Tōei buses from Hanazono Station make the trip quick and easy.
