Ryozen Kannon is a 24-metre statue of Kannon, the Buddhist bodhisattva of compassion, built as a memorial to unknown Japanese soldiers who died in the Second World War. It stands in eastern Kyoto, not far from the temple paths around Higashiyama.
The site is solemn rather than ornate, and it is most worthwhile if you are already walking between the nearby temples and want a different view of Kyoto's wartime memory.
