Yoshimine-dera

Mountain temple on the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage route

Yoshimine-dera is a hillside temple southwest of central Kyoto, founded in the 11th century and later granted imperial rank. It is the 20th temple on the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage, with halls and paths spread across a wooded slope.

The distance from the city centre keeps crowds lighter than at Kyoto's famous inner-city temples. Come for the mountain air, seasonal flowers, and wide views over the Kyoto basin.
