Senko-ji

Senko-ji is a small memorial temple above the Hozu River in Arashiyama. It was built for people who died working on river and dam projects under Suminokura Ryoi, and the grounds include monuments, statues, and a haiku linked to Matsuo Basho.

The temple is modest compared with Arashiyama's major sights, but the riverside walk to reach it is part of the appeal, with views over the blue-green water of the Hozu.
