Ryozen Gokoku Shrine commemorates Japan's war dead, from the upheavals around the Meiji Restoration through the Russo-Japanese War and the Pacific War. It was the first shrine officially recognized for that purpose.
The shrine is close to the temple paths of Higashiyama and pairs naturally with nearby Ryozen Kannon, though its mood is more solemn than scenic.
