Jishu Shrine

Love shrine inside the Kiyomizu-dera precinct with a pair of "love stones"

Jishu Shrine sits inside the precinct of Kiyomizu-dera and is dedicated to the deity Ōkuninushi, traditionally associated with love and matchmaking. Most visitors come for the koi-no-uranai-ishi — the two "love-fortune stones" set in the pavement of the shrine grounds about ten metres apart. Tradition holds that anyone who walks from one stone to the other with their eyes shut and arrives without help will find true love; anyone who needs guidance from a companion will likewise need that companion's help to find love.

The shrine is much older than the tradition suggests and a national pilgrimage site for matters of the heart. It is normally crowded with high-school students, often loudly cheering on classmates attempting the stones, and the atmosphere is more lively than reverent. Omamori charms in the shape of bells or hearts make the local souvenir.
